Six Degrees Case Study | iOS App for Remembering People

Six Degrees

Strengthen everyday connections through fast voice capture, location-based reminders, and shareable lists built for people who meet new faces all the time.

Helping People Remember Everyone They Meet

The Brief

Our client approached SoftwareOrbits with a vision to build Six Degrees, a mobile app that helps people remember the casual acquaintances they meet in everyday life — the bartender who knows great cocktails, the gym regular who turns out to be a physical therapist, the customer who comes back to the farm stand every Saturday.

The main objective was clear: capture the name, the place, and a few memorable details in under ten seconds, and then quietly remind the user about that person when they returned to where they met. Before Six Degrees, there was no app built specifically for this kind of relationship. Professional contacts had LinkedIn. Sales pipelines had CRMs. Family and close friends lived in the phone’s address book. But the casual acquaintances — the ones research shows are actually the most valuable for new ideas, opportunities, and information — had nowhere to live.

SoftwareOrbits designed the platform to feel effortless, private, and human. The goal was to give users a quiet tool that worked in the background of their social lives, never pushy, always helpful, and ready in the exact moment it mattered.

The Challenge

The brief sounded simple. The execution was anything but.

Three problems had to be solved at the same time, and each one was tied to the others. First, capture had to be fast. Field testing and behavioral research made one thing obvious early on: if adding a new person took more than ten seconds, people would not do it. That single constraint shaped every screen, every input method, every decision about what to ask the user and what to figure out automatically.

Second, the reminder system had to be helpful without ever feeling intrusive. Location-based notifications can easily cross the line from useful to unsettling. The platform had to feel like a thoughtful friend tapping the user on the shoulder, not a surveillance tool.

Third, the product had to stay focused. There was constant temptation to add features that would have turned Six Degrees into a CRM, a social network, or another version of the phone’s contacts app. None of those were the goal. The challenge was to build something deliberately narrow — a tool that does one thing exceptionally well — and to defend that focus throughout design and development.

The Solution

SoftwareOrbits approached Six Degrees with a research-led, user-first development strategy, building each part of the product around how real people actually meet, remember, and forget the people in their lives.

01

Grounding the Product in Real Human Behavior

Before any screens were designed, SoftwareOrbits worked with the client to translate a sociological idea into a product. The starting point was a well-known finding that casual acquaintances — the people you see occasionally — are often more valuable than close friends when it comes to discovering new opportunities, ideas, and perspectives. The catch is that these connections fade quickly without reinforcement. Names are forgotten. Context is lost. Awkward moments take the place of what could have been a real relationship. This insight shaped everything: the capture flow, the reminder logic, what the app collects, and just as importantly, what it deliberately does not.

02

A Ten-Second Capture Experience

The capture flow is the heart of the product. SoftwareOrbits designed it to be the fastest way to record a person on a mobile device, period. Users tap a single prominent button and either speak or type a natural sentence — the kind of thing they would say to a friend. “Mike, bartender at Saru Sushi, tall blonde, loves house music.” From that one sentence, the app does the rest. It pulls out the name, the role, and the memorable details. It uses the phone’s location to figure out where the meeting happened, with a one-tap override if the guess is wrong. The user reviews a clean confirmation screen, taps approve, and the contact is saved. No forms. No fields. No friction.

03

Reminders That Feel Like a Friendly Nudge

Six Degrees does not buzz the user on arbitrary schedules or pressure them to “reach out this week.” Instead, it waits patiently. When the user returns to a place where they met someone, the app sends a quiet, well-timed reminder — the right context at the right moment. SoftwareOrbits built careful safeguards into this system. Reminders only appear after a cooldown period, so walking past the same coffee shop three times in an afternoon doesn’t trigger three notifications. The wording is warm and short. And when the app is already open, the reminder appears as a soft in-app banner rather than a push notification. The result is a feature that feels less like an alert and more like a memory surfacing at exactly the right moment.

04

Shareable Lists for Sharing Local Knowledge

One of the most distinctive features of Six Degrees is the ability to create and share lists of people with friends — a curated “best bartenders in the city” or “people worth knowing at the conference.” When a friend visits a new place, they don’t have to start from scratch. They inherit the user’s local knowledge, with full context for every person. SoftwareOrbits designed these lists with clear permission levels, a transparent activity feed so collaborators can see who added what, and native sharing through the iPhone’s familiar share menu. The feature turns the app from a personal memory tool into a way of passing along social goodwill.

Privacy as a Starting Point, Not an Afterthought

Six Degrees handles inherently personal information. SoftwareOrbits made privacy a foundational design choice rather than a compliance checkbox. The user’s data lives on their device first, syncs quietly in the background, and is never shared with anyone unless the user explicitly chooses to share it. There are no public profiles, no feeds, no algorithms deciding what the user sees. The product is built to be useful without ever feeling like it is watching.

A Network You Can See and Explore

Saving people is only half the value. Users also need to find them again — sometimes by name, sometimes by place, sometimes just by browsing through the people they’ve met recently. SoftwareOrbits built two complementary ways to navigate the network. A People view shows every contact as a clean card, sorted by who was added most recently, so the most relevant connection is always near the top. A Places view organizes the same information by location, so the user can quickly see everyone they know at a favorite bar, gym, or coffee shop. A full-text search runs across names, places, and notes — so typing “bartender” surfaces every bartender the user has ever saved, regardless of where they met. Recognition, not recall, was the design principle throughout.

A Map That Turns the Network Into a Place

Beyond lists, Six Degrees offers a map view that shows the user’s entire social network as pins on a familiar interface. Each pin marks a venue where the user has met someone, with a small number showing how many people they know there. SoftwareOrbits designed this view to make the user’s social geography visible at a glance. A user can see where they spend time, where their connections cluster, and where they might want to return. Tapping any pin opens a sheet showing every person met at that location, with all their context intact. The map turns the abstract idea of a personal network into something the user can literally see.

The Impact

Since launching the MVP, Six Degrees has given users a tool that genuinely changes the texture of everyday social life. Users walk into a familiar bar and remember the bartender’s name before they reach the counter. They greet returning customers by name at the farm stand. They share a curated list with a friend visiting town and know that friend will have a richer experience than they would have figured out alone.

The product also reflects what SoftwareOrbits delivers consistently across its engagements: a clear-headed translation of a client’s vision into a usable product, careful design choices that protect the user, and an MVP that ships ready to grow. Six Degrees was built to be expanded — new features, richer insights, and broader platform support are all on the roadmap — but the core product works because the fundamentals were taken seriously from the start.

For the client, Six Degrees is a fully realized first version of a much bigger idea — a quiet, human tool for strengthening the connections that everyday life keeps trying to let slip away.
