QUITTR Wellness App Development | SoftwareOrbits

QUITTR

QUITTR is a wellness app development project SoftwareOrbits delivered from concept to launch — a cross-platform recovery app helping over two million people build healthier habits through streak tracking, real-time crisis support, and a supportive community.

Helping Over Two Million People Reclaim Control

The Brief

Our client approached SoftwareOrbits to build QUITTR, a recovery app that helps users overcome porn addiction and rebuild healthier daily habits. The vision was ambitious from the start: a single product that combined real-time crisis intervention, progress tracking, AI-powered support, content filtering, gamified milestones, and a moderated community — all on both iOS and Android, with a native experience on each.

QUITTR’s audience is people in a vulnerable moment of their lives. Many have tried to change before and failed. They have used willpower alone. They have used promises. They have used calendars. For most, none of it held. The brief was to design a tool that would actually work in the moments that matter — when temptation is real, when motivation is low, when the user is reaching for their phone for the wrong reason.

SoftwareOrbits was tasked with delivering a product that felt trustworthy, respectful, and clinically credible, while still being engaging enough that users would return to it every day during the hardest stretches of their recovery.

The Challenge

Recovery products are unforgiving. The audience is vulnerable, the subject is sensitive, and small UX failures translate directly into real-world setbacks. Several problems had to be solved at once, and each one carried real consequences.

First, the product needed to earn trust immediately. Users were unlikely to share their personal struggles with an app that felt clinical or judgmental. The interface, the tone of every word, and the design of the onboarding flow all had to feel like a quiet ally rather than a self-help lecture.

Second, the content filter had to be genuinely difficult to defeat — including by the user themselves. The hardest moments in recovery are not when users want the app to help them. They are when users want the app to get out of the way. The filter had to be strong enough to hold the line during those moments while still respecting user autonomy.

Third, crisis intervention had to be instant. When temptation strikes, the user has seconds, not minutes. Any friction, any loading screen, any extra tap could mean the difference between a saved streak and a relapse. The panic button had to be one of the most reliable, fastest interactions in the entire product.

Fourth, the gamification system had to motivate sustained progress without trivializing it. A serious behavioral issue cannot be reduced to a points game. But milestones, streaks, and achievements are some of the most powerful tools in modern habit science. The challenge was to use them with care.

Finally, the product had to ship as a truly native experience on both iOS and Android, with no compromise on either side.

The Solution

SoftwareOrbits approached QUITTR as a behavior-change product first and a mobile app second. Every feature was designed around what would actually help users hold the line in the hardest moments of their recovery.

01

A Behavior-Change Engine, Not Just a Tracker

QUITTR is built around the idea that progress has to be visible to be motivating. The dashboard gives users a clear view of their current streak, their longest streak, and how far they have come over weeks and months of effort. Daily check-ins, milestone markers, and gentle nudges keep the user engaged without nagging. SoftwareOrbits also helped bring a unique achievement system to life — a set of beautifully designed milestone orbs that users unlock as they progress, from Sprout in the earliest days through Nirvana, Sovereign, and Luminary at the longest streaks. The orbs are intentionally aspirational and visually distinctive. They give users something to work toward that feels meaningful, personal, and unmistakably theirs.

02

A Panic Button for the Moment That Matters

The single most important feature in any recovery product is the one the user reaches for in their hardest moment. QUITTR’s panic button is exactly that. One tap, and the user is taken into a calming, distracting, supportive flow designed to interrupt the urge and redirect attention. SoftwareOrbits made this interaction the fastest path in the entire app. There are no setup steps, no menus to navigate, and no decisions to make in the moment of temptation. The user taps once, and the app does the rest.

03

Melius — A 24/7 AI Companion

Human support is powerful, but it isn’t always available. Late at night, during a stressful work moment, or in the middle of a long weekend, the user often has no one to talk to. QUITTR’s AI companion, Melius, fills that gap with a friendly, always-available presence designed to listen, encourage, and guide users through difficult stretches. SoftwareOrbits worked closely with the client to make sure Melius felt genuinely helpful rather than generic. The companion was designed to respond with empathy, share practical strategies grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy principles, and gently steer users toward healthier choices in real time.

04

A Content Filter That Holds the Line

QUITTR’s content filter is built to be robust against the most common workarounds — including the ones users might attempt themselves during a moment of low willpower. It runs quietly in the background and is deliberately harder to disable than it is to enable. SoftwareOrbits engineered the filter to close as many loopholes as the platform permitted while still keeping the product respectful of user autonomy. Recovery only works when the user is doing it for themselves, but a well-designed filter gives them a stronger position to fight from.

A Community of People on the Same Journey

Recovery is lonely until you find people who understand. QUITTR’s community connects users with others on similar paths — sharing milestones, struggles, advice, and encouragement. Daily posts from members around the world remind users that they are not alone and that progress is possible. SoftwareOrbits built the community infrastructure to scale to over a million active members, with moderation safeguards in place to keep conversations safe, supportive, and on-topic. The community quickly became one of the most valued parts of the product, with hundreds of new posts contributed every day.

Built Native on Both iOS and Android

A cross-platform recovery app cannot afford to feel like a port on either side. SoftwareOrbits built QUITTR natively in Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android, ensuring that each platform feels fast, responsive, and familiar to its users. Animations, gestures, notifications, and system integrations all behave the way a native app should. This decision mattered most in the moments where speed and reliability are critical — the panic button, the content filter, the daily check-in — where a single dropped frame or a slow load could undermine the user’s trust in the product.

A 30-Day Challenge to Build Real Momentum

Lasting change rarely comes from a single decision — it comes from stringing together enough good days that they become a habit. QUITTR’s 30-Day Challenge gives users a clear, structured path through that critical first month, when motivation is highest but discipline is still forming. SoftwareOrbits designed the challenge around small, achievable daily actions — exercise, cold exposure, meditation, journaling, and staying on track — each one reinforcing the next. Completing a day moves the user forward visibly, and the structure turns an overwhelming long-term goal into something manageable: just get through today. It is habit science applied with intention, giving users a sense of progress and control exactly when they need it most.

The Impact

QUITTR has grown into one of the most widely used recovery apps in the world. The product is trusted by more than two million users and has been featured in The Times, The New York Times, Men’s Health, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and Starter Story. QUITTR reports that hundreds of thousands of users have successfully changed long-standing habits using the app, with strong reported improvements in focus, energy, confidence, and overall life quality.

The product also reflects what SoftwareOrbits delivers consistently: a careful translation of a difficult brief into a usable product, design choices that respect the user, and a cross-platform mobile experience that performs natively on both iOS and Android. QUITTR was built to be expanded — new features, deeper personalization, and broader platform support continue to ship — but the foundation works because the fundamentals were taken seriously from the start.

For the client, QUITTR is more than an app. It is a meaningful tool that has helped hundreds of thousands of people regain control of their lives, build healthier habits, and become the version of themselves they always knew they could be.
